Summer Cleaning with Essential Oils
Happy summer, everyone! We are in the midst of beautiful sunshine here in the PNW, and we are well into our summer vacation. This is one of the times we take to do a little extra cleaning around the home. One of my favorite ways to clean is to use essential oils! If you are new to using essential oils, be sure to check out a few of my other essential oil posts. (KidSafe blends and DIY candle).

Plant Therapy (by far my favorite essential oil brand), made a perfect set of oils to help with your daily cleaning routine. The set comes with 6, 10 mL essential oils. All of these oils are ideal for tidying the home, but have so many more uses beyond that. This is also a great bargain! The set of 6 is only $34.95, which will save you a ton! Check out below how I use each of these robust oils around my home.

This is a wonderful blend of Lemon, Clove Bud, Eucalyptus Globulus, Cinnamon Cassia, Rosemary, and Cineole. I especially love this oil during cold season, but it works great in a DIY disinfectant spray. I use 1/2 cup vinegar, 1 cup water, and 30-40 drops of essential oils. Check out a great spray bottle-label set HERE. This spray is perfect for the bathroom counter, toilet and bathtub. It is going to leave your bathroom smelling so fresh and clean!
Tea Tree essential oil has many uses. You can use the same DIY spray above with Tea Tree oil (or really any of the oils), but my favorite is to use it to clean the dishwasher. About once a month, I like to run the dishwasher without dishes, just to be sure it is extra, sparkly clean. Mix about a table spoon of baking soda with 10 drops of oil and put right in the soap container. Run a the dishwasher on a short load and wa-lah!
This might be my favorite in the set (or pretty high up there). This is a blend of Grapefruit, Lemon, Lime, May Chang, Mandarin, Sweet Orange. How could that not be amazing?! This one is perfect for for a DIY carpet cleaner. Mix 30 drops with about 2 cups of baking soda. Sprinkle over carpets and let set for 30-60 minutes. Then vacuum and leave the carpets smelling like a field of citrus!
Lavender is one of those essential oils that really is a MUST HAVE. I personally use this at night time in a carrier oil on my little ones (this oil is kid safe) but I also love it in an air spray. I just mix about a cup of water with 20 drops and spray to freshen the home. I actually use the same spray outside to keep the mosquitoes away! Along with this, try adding a few drops to a dryer sheet when you dry your clothes and your load of laundry will be fresh like flowers.
Okay, this is another must have oil. I could talk about this one for hours but let me just say, I am obsessed. I think my favorite way to use this oil is to detract those little rascal sugar ants. DUN DUN DUN... I moved in my brand new home about a month ago, and guess who came marching in? That is correct, pesky little ants (a lot more than 2 by 2). Peppermint worked amazing at repelling them away. I mixed 1 cup water with 30 drops of peppermint and sprayed anywhere they were walking.
Not only did it keep the ants gone, but it also left a cool,
invigorating scent!
Lemon is such an uplifting clean smell that you cannot go wrong! I use this a lot for air spray or cleaning the kitchen counters, but another great idea is to use it to disinfect the kids' toys. I add about 20 drops in 1 cup water, and 1/4 cup vinegar. I spray on toys to wipe down any germs that were left behind. This is a great oil because it is safe for kids to be around and is such an energizing and clean smell. Love it!
This cleaning set is the perfect starter package. My ideas above work well for me, but you really can change around which oil you use, in which cleaner you prefer. Play around and find out what your family loves. You can also check out my Instagram page to see me using these oils and for more DIY ideas!
